With less training than normal and being fatter and less fit than ever before, I decided to take part in my 4^th National Coal Carrying Championship in Gawthorpe, Ossett.

Although there is no machine to do all jobs, there is one that has taken the retail sector by storm! Both the Haulotte Star 10 and JLG Toucan 10/10 (26MB) are a very popular machines for contractors unsure what job needs doing when arriving to site. With a width of only 1 meter and the stowed height just under 2 meters, the 26MB is perfect for getting into a store and manoeuvring into those tight spaces.

Final preparations are being made for the new Horizon Warrington Depot, machines are being delivered as we speak and our new trucks are on the way. Operations are being headed up by Horizon’s own Claire Ekert and supported by a team of experienced local engineers and drivers.

The use of a harness and lanyard in a MEWP often causes much confusion.  It raises questions such as:

• Should I use a harness in a scissor lift?
• What type of harness should I use?
• Can you use a fall arrest lanyard in a MEWP?
• Can I leave the platform whilst still anchored inside the basket?

Horizon Platforms offer the course that is accredited by IPAF call MEWPs for Managers. The aim of this course is to instruct a supervisor/manager what is required to prepare for and safely co-ordinate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) within their control.
